Phase diagrams of alloys based on niobium

International Symposium Niobium'81

1981
Argent, Bernard B
The phase constitution of binary and ternary alloys of niobium has been reviewed and information is presented on the solubilities observed and the intermediate phases which are formed. This information is discussed in terms of atomic size, chemical characteristics and the structures of the phases which occur. (AU)

The benefical effect of niobium alloying in gray cast iron - Fundamentals and applications
Gray cast machinable iron consists of flake or spheroidal graphite in a ferritic, pearlitic, austenitic or martensitic matrix. This variety of microstructural combinations is used in a multitude of applications. Typical examples are vehicle brake systems, combustion engine blocks and machinery equipment.

Niobium alloying in grey cast iron for vehicle brake discs
Vehicle brake discs and drums fail due to thermal cracking and due to high wear. A small amount of niobium is added to the gray iron in the foundry casting process, and has been demonstrated to greatly extend the brake life and performance.
