Alloy cost optimization using Niobium replacing molybdenum in nodular cast iron (SiMo) for turbine housings
This study was originally presented at the 74th World Foundry Congress.Nodular cast iron is a vastly used material, one of its main applications is in the automotive industry at casting products such as turbine housings, exhaust manifolds and other components. Besides offering good performance in such applications due to its good castability as well as its high oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength. The NCI has been facing a tremendous price pressure recently due to different reasons. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find some alternative of alloying element to reduce the alloy price. Niobium (Nb) can be considered an optimum alternative for this purpose, replacing molybdenum (Mo) in the NCI - SiMo. This study will consider the microstructural and mechanical effects of different niobium additions comparing it to the standard (SiMo). Read the full techinical report.
