How Niobium contributes to reduce hot cracking formation in high alloyed casting steels
While OEM’s are constantly looking for defect-free castings for their products, common challenges that keep arising in thin-walled castings include cold run, inclusions and hot cracks. These can lead to cast scraping. Hence, this case study was conducted to evaluate how Niobium usage can be optimized in foundries for producing casting parts with reduced scrap.About the StudyIn this study the idea was to select a simple mold that can be easy to evaluate. The image below shows the design of the mold selected.Length of the bars (in mm)Observations suggested that lesser the niobium, the higher the cracks, highlighted in red circles below. Based on these observations, the study tried to determine the reason why this was happening, trends in the alloy developments and the best possible scenarios for the mold to reduce crackingTo learn more about the interesting results of the study, download our exclusive technical briefing!Download now.
