How does niobium make stronger and tougher steels?

Niobium increases both the strength and toughness of hot-rolled carbon manganese steels made by conventional production routes.

How does a small amount of niobium dramatically increase the mechanical properties of steel? Through grain refinement. Niobium has been shown to play a unique and indispensable role in grain refinement. Finer grain sizes are the key to the generation of enhanced yield strength and the simultaneous improvement in toughness in a wide range of steel products.
